A new feature we recently added is a "download as pdf" function. We offer all our paying members this.
This means that you can get your moblog - all pictures and all the text you written over the years, or since yesterday depending on when you signed up and for how long you have been moblogging with us.

The sum we ask our users to pay is decided by those who pay -that is, you pay what you think it is worth to download your blog as a pdf.

And what do you do with the PDF? Well, for one thing it is a backup. If we decide to shut down mobilblog.net (which we are not) or if you want to print it, email it, or maybe just save it as a gift. Say for instance, that you have moblogged your first year in highschool, or your vacation, or any other period of time worth making a book about that you want to share or save.

Well, my pdf is like a photodiary, now securely stored for grandchildrens to find when I am gone, hopefully many years from now. (if they have pdf readers ;-)

The Everyday Seen Trough a Camera Phone

Karin Wagner wrote a paper from the Conference "A European Cultural Studies Conference in Sweden", held at Linköping University in June 2007.

I have mentioned Karin Wagner and her work on moblogging before.

Now her first paper is published. The moblogs she has been following are moblog.co.uk, mobilblogg.net (which is the one I'm connected to), albinogorilla from Denmark and the dutch moblog.nl.

The research project she is called "From celluloid to pixels: Network and ritual around e-cinema and mobile phone Camera". The mobile phone part of that project is hers.

The image of everyday life is in focus for this paper, and sure, those pictures are very common on moblogs, and a few examples from mobilblogg.net are in the paper to illustrate that.

Launch of moblog and photoblog for new parents

We have been working hard lately,creating a moblog/blog/vlogg/daily journal for newborn babies, or actually, their mothers (or fathers).

It is the local newspaper that figured "since we always have had a lively family section with newborn ads - why not take this to the web? "

They have worked with us earlier on some projects (for example creating a moblog for the towns soccer team).

So they asked us to come up with a solution where they could offer new parents to publish pictures and videos of their little ones.

The result was launched in may, and has since then received a steady stream of new parents signing up, and posting pictures via MMS, mail and uploads, creating photo albums and writing daily entries.

The newspaper is happy, since they have a well defined audience for their advertisers (strollers, toys, baby-clothes, all parents knows what I am talking about).

Grandparents, friends and the like can subscribe to notification via email when a new picture of the baby they are subscribing to is posted.

There also seems to be a growing communication between the parents, sharing a lot of their experiences, asking each others questions and such, which could indicate the birth of a community.

What makes a moblog a moblog?

When surfing the net searching for moblogs I often stumble over something called "moblog" and what I see is uploaded pictures clearly NOT taken with cameraphones.

Well... if the picture is NOT taken with a mobile camera, and a mobile telephone is NOT used to send the picture - then why call it a moblog?

On the other hand -why restrict users to cameraphones? Maybe posting screenshots and photos via computer suits them better in some cases-the moblog functions are just one of many ways to blog? Maybe that is better? But is it a moblog?

And when is it not a moblog? When there is no way to post from your mobile (of course), or when nobody uses those moblog features (could be)?

is that fever and fever sends in pictures that are not taken by cameraphone (in other words: almost all pictures and movies sent to mobilblogg.net are taken with cameraphones, and sent from the phone via mail or MMS)

The main thoughts are posted and numbered, number 14 is about moblogging.

The conclusion is correct "However, talking to a couple of blogging tech providers at 3GSM (including Motorola), people have twigged that moblogging is more about instant posting of photos and videos as (or just after) you capture them. Which when you think about it, makes way more sense."

Yes, it does make sense to me! Good thinking Motorola!

Three years of moblogging

Today, three years ago, the first picture was moblogged to mobilblog.net.

A lot of things have happened since then. I think that for someone interested in the life in Sweden between 2004 and 2007 we can present quite unique photo-material.

Mobilblogg.net have during these years been recognized by Swedish media (both online and offline)several times, always getting good reviews-

We now have registered users from over 10 countries,

We have over the years implemented several new features - most recent is the flashplayer for moblogged movies, and most important of all:

- we have a strong, active and welcoming community!

This community is blogging away from their mobilephones in an ever increasing flow of pictures and movies as more and more users are signing up.

(And I still don't think that moblogging has seen it's breakthrough yet)

Moblog as travelbog

A group of mobloggers at mobilblogg.net just came back from Thailand. The whole trip was followed by our community (and some outsiders, the travellers relatives and girlrfriends).

They moblogged just about everything they did and created a nice album with pictures from thailand.

They bought pre-paid international SIM card from 12Call and Happy, mobile carriers in Thailand, and paid domestic rates for sending MMS, which is about a third of the price here in Sweden.

Study of moblogging

Not long ago we had a visit from Karin Wagner, who for the University of Gothenburg is doing a study on some moblog communities, - moblog.co.uk, mobilblogg.net and "some dutch moblog"(she didnt say or I don't remember).

It turned into an interesting interview, and she raised some questions that I never thought of, and some things that I don't reflect on anymore. I'm not going to give you many examples, you will have to read her study when it´s finsihed. :-)

The thing I was most proud of was how impressed she was over how lively and friendly our community is. How friendly people are, how creative, and how much time and energy people put into their moblogs and the surrounding community.

There have also been arranged some IRL activities, like bowling, invitations to parties and guided tours of one city to mobloggers visiting from another city. I don't really think about that anymore, just taking it for granted. Well, these activities are of course being moblogged as they happen, but apart from that I think they occur in most successful online communities.

Recent Moblog Launces

We have been very busy lately, launching moblogs for our client Sydsvenskan. I wrote a line about the carneval theme moblog we did last summer.

After that we followed up with some more moblogs, adding some new features such as albums and rating of pictures.

The theme for the different moblogs have shifted over time- Sydsvenskan is the major newspaper in southerns Sweden they wanted their readers pictures from current events.

So, we have built and launched moblogs for Summer, Soccer World Cup (we got some cool pictures from Germany), Ramadan and just finished the Christmas Moblog. I sure had no idea what to expect, but some of the moblogs where very popular and readers of Sydsvenskan seem to have getting the hang of it.

The ones where a reward for the best picture was offered, and where pictures got printed in the paper, recived more pictures than those moblogs that where not promoted. This makes marketing of moblogs something to remember - just launching a moblog is not good enough. The old "whats in it for me" question must be answered in order to get a moblog living.

Sydsvenskan are very pleased with their moblogs, since it gives them a good dialogue with their readers.

At the moment there is no moblog "live", but the old ones are wrapped up and can be seen here, at Sydsvenskans website.

a J2ME application (initial prototype developed in Python) that allows you to link up your phone via Bluetooth to a GPS unit and then create (mo)blogs of text and pictures which are the tagged with latitude and longitude (on Google Maps) Read more...

I see plenty of use for this, the obviuous example is travelblogging. Moblogs in general, even at current level (without locations) are very good traveljournals.

No computer, no internet connection, just a phone. Surely you can fit that in your backpack?

P990i

My old P900 broke. Well I did it. I had it in the pocket of my shorts, smashed it against a cardoor. Then took a swim in a pool with it. (I was sober)

So I bought the new Sony Ericsson P990i. And that made me happy. What a difference! Faster, better, more functions and, tadaaa- WiFi! I have been blogging with it since.

I havent used all functions yet, and to be honest, I doubt I ever will. The phone is designed to do everything you can do in your office, and thats not really how I use my phone.

The only thing that might not be good, is how it looks. Yellowish/golden/silver.. shit.. why not black? That metallic plastic looks lika a VHS from the 80's.

(Its a matter of taste, of course)

UPDATE: Now I have had it for some weeks, and I am less satisfied. The software is slow, the browser freezes, and it sometimes restarts when I want to shut it of.

As said before, Textamerica will now charge 99 dollars a year. And they will delete all users who does not.

Alfie, at moblogUK welcomes all users who want a free moblog service and there is an application (download here) made buy a moblogUK user that will help mobloggers to move their pictures from textamerica to mologUK.

Alfie also says: We do want to get the word out to Textamerica users but we donÂt want this to be a moblogUK vs Textamerica thing, because frankly, it isnÂt - but itÂs really cool that someone has taken the time to write an import application for people who donÂt want to suddenly see their accounts, many of whom will have had them for years, deleted.

This step made by TA really rocks the boat for all moblog community nerds (thats me).

Well then? Are you waiting for me to promote mobilblogg.net? I won't, because, as the community evolves, it is getting more and more recognized that this moblog is for Scandinavians. And we already have some TA dropouts, they came for the language to be together with their countrymen, for example to discuss Swedish soccer (instead of American football).

Of course some Americans, Irishmen, Poles, some Egyptian, and Indians are blogging at mobilblogg. But they don't really participate in the community.

So maybe Scandinavian TA mobloggers will move over to us? We will see. The majority though, who are americans, will go to moblogUK where english is the language. Or maybe stay and pay at TA?

We will see. (Of course, former TA bloggers are most welcome to mobilblogg.net!)

It finally happened!

For the last couple of years the web has been presenting a growing amount of free moblog services. These moblogs in turn have presented a growing amount of mobloggers- using the services for free.. (remember - free moblog services!)

And now - the biggest moblog service of them all - the American moblog community textamerica, finally did it. They charge new users 99 dollars a year.

It was bound to happen. The question is - what will happen now? Will people pay? Will users drop out? Will the community revolt, as happened when Yahoo demanded Yahoo memberships for Flickr users?

Well.. We will see.. But let me guess - I guess that the community at textamerica is strong enough to keep their users, and that the users who are active within the community are willing to pay- because they will (rightly) think it is worth it.

Some users might drop out, but it will be those who were not really into it anyway.
Recruiting will be harder. At least as long as there are free alternatives around. And there are plenty of them out there.

Event moblog

Every fourth year, the students at the University of Lund hosts a carneval... and this year was Carneval year!

The media coverage of this event was slightly different this year. Four years ago there where hardly any mobilephones around, and not many sent pictures from their phones.

This year, many have cameraphones, and everybody at the carneval were invited to send their mobilepictures as MMS to a moblog hosted by the local newspaper. This way, an event- moblog was born, showing pictures from the carneval as it happened, with the carnevalists as mobloggers.
The moblog can be seen here, and is now closed for incoming messages. (the carneval is over)

The crew behind mobilblogg.net made it happen, based on knowledge and technology used at mobilblogg.net.

The moblog was up and running from tuesday to monday, and was a bit slow to start with, but filled up with pictures and comments as the weekend approached.

It worked by letting people send MMSes to a (easy-to-remember) mailadress, and pictures was published instantly, without preview from the editors. (however, there was moderation, and viewers could report misbehaviour). Pictures was also open for the public to comment on, without pre-moderation. All in all, it was almost too open for me to be comfortable.

Some decisions had to be made along the way regarding how open or closed it should be -should we let people moblog to mailadress or a phone number?, allow anonymous comments or not? preview and publish all pictures manually or use unmoderated publishing? etc etc. All in all, we let openess and participation rule over control and moderation as long as we could. And it worked.

The only restriction we made was that the moblog was closed at night, when the editors were sleeping. Pictures sent after midninght was first published the next day.

Our customer, the newspaper, was very pleased with the moblog, and new projects are already underway :-)

Researching moblogging

Karin Wagner, a swedish Doctor of Arts and Science will over a three year period study one English (moblog.co.uk?) one Danish, one Dutch and one Swedish (yep, mobilblogg.nu) moblog.

There is an article in GP - a morning paper from Gothenburg, about it, interviewing Karin.

They also bring up the similarities between moblogging and Lomogaphy.

I wonder where they got that idea?, maybe from here?

The article is good, answering the "who moblogs, and what" questions... the why is left out. I hope they will answer the "Why do people moblog" question when the study is being published.

We'll just have to wait a few years...

Ok, it's a fairly new site, so I will not be too hard on them, and I guess they will

2- create and present thumbnails for all mobogservices in their list.

And I hope their list, with inputs from the visitors, will be as complete as possible. I sometimes think I spend too much time looking for moblogservices and moblog news, it would be nice to have one, reliable and updated source.

But I am always suspicious when I see toplists of services or software... who's behind? And why? Is it one of the moblog outfits on the top ten list?

Brilliant. Watch the interview here before it's edited and broadcasted on TV by channel 8 themselves- and don't miss the comments written by the TA Community.

Chris Hoar makes some very good points, and sort of pops the baloon for the TV crew looking for scandals.
"Why should they be held to higher standards than MTV which is owned by your company" and
"we are not 100% perfect, but we do take action" are my favorite quotes.

But the subject brought up by channel 8 is important for all picturesharing sites, - what is ok and what is not OK to post, and who enforces the rules when you have tenthousands of pictures incoming everyday?

It is easier than you might think (but not easy, I said easIER)). My theory is this-

1- There are moblogs and picturesharingsites where your picture is welcome, regardless of what it is. Then why bother posting to sites where they are not welcome, and therefore removed, (and you get banned)?

2- Most communities are pretty self governed, with alphausers deleting or reporting all violations to the rules. An active (and healthy) community is the best defense against unwanted pictures.

Tele2 Comviq offers MMS for free

Tele2 Comviq in Sweden now offers their clients free MMSes.

"We think that this initiative, with free MMSes, is what is needed to get the MMS market going" Says Thomas Ekman at Tele2 Comviq .

Yes indeed. Lower the prices is one important step. Another one is to create useful services and applications for MMSes, like moblogging.

SMS and MMS differ in how they are used.

SMSes are fantastic for short, urgent messages, like "Im a bit late" or "Im there now, where are you?" and "remember to buy milk". None of these examples are in need of a picture to illustrate the message. All of them in some way demand a reply and a SMS often is the start to a longer chain of SMSes in a dialogue.

MMSes are in nature different. The picture IS the message. The text more or less just comes with it,(and sometimes not, the picture speaks for itself). The timing is also different. SMSes are "read now and reply now"- MMSes are more like postcards- the NEED to reply is not there in the same way as in a SMS. Unless you have an equally good pic to reply with, you don't (instead you reply with an sms).

And when the picture is the message a moblog is better than a phone to view, collect and share the pictures.

Nokias Lifeblog 2.0

Exciting times we moblogoholics live in. Last week, SonyEricssons moblogphones and now NOKIA launches Lifeblog 2.0

And what are people saying? Usual comment on SE's initiative is "Nice but only if you use Blogger, googles blogtool" (and between the lines we understand that google will turn "evil" any time now, which happens to all companies with total marketdomination.)

But lets compare these two initiatives.

SE chose blogger, NOKIA Six Apart, (according to this article, couldn't find any references on nokia.com)

SE puts the main focus on simplicity - with the Bestpic solution we all can use regardless of how and where we share. One click and you have a moblog.

NOKIAS features with tagging and locations are far more sophisticated, but still only works with Liefblog 2.0 (?) And on PC only. No mac users allowed. ( I have a mac and is somewhat biased)

NOKIA demands one download for your N Series phone, one for your PC.
SE phones are ready to go.

So the most platform independent and user friendly initiative is SE's, (based on that you dont need a PC, or even a computer)?

The most sophisticated and with the most functionality is NOKIA? (based on all the functions with tagging and audioclips that SE don't have- yet)

(And about the audioclips- that will soon be a feature on all moblogs).

Both of them thinks that moblogs first of all are medialbums, or simple blogs.
None of them emphasizes community moblogging- which maybe is natural. But for most who discovered moblogging, for them it is a social thing. It is not about photoalbums.

I have one objection to the comparison I made here. It all collapses if you claim that Lifeblog 2.0 is not moblogging. It is something else, maybe Life recording.

What are people moblogging?

We now have had mobilblogg.net up and running for 2 years, and I often get the question "what are the favourite motives for moblogging, what are people taking pictures of?

The short answer is food, wheather, and (their) kids.

Of course there are many other preferred motives, like cars, pets, famous buildings, scenery, parties and so on, but kids, food and weather, - that must be in human nature to show and share.

Nothing starts a flood of pics like a sudden snowfall, or a thunderstorm. Every parent has at least a dozen pics of their little ones snapped away to their moblog. Every damn day at noon someone moblogs their lunch!

Why?

I surely can understand the kids, I blog my little ones quite often, using the album function to gather the pics, (a perfect link to send my mother in law :-)

But the food? Why food but not coffee? I must admit, every time I sit down to eat I feel an urge to blog my food. I seldom feel the same about coffe...

And what else do Homo Sapiens need? If the weather is nice, you have food, and your kids are safe and sound, then no worries?

Cavemen would moblog about the same things.

And here is a guy who not only blogs his lunch, he blogs EVERY meal.. , keep on blogging cypher.. at least I'm interested in what you will have for lunch tomorrow.

Sony Ericsson and Blogger

I have earlier been complaining about the lack of moblog initiatives from Sony Ericsson. But here is one!

Sony Ericsson have released a new brand- the cyber shot for K800 and K790 cameraphones, with built in mobloggingfeatures. Apparently, the cybershot have the option to "blog" a picture, instead of just send as MMS/Email/bluetooth/IR. (Sound a bit like a pre-installed Shozu).

The blogging option works with - tadaaa- googles blogtool, also known as blogger.

Another very nice feature is the BestPic function, that delivers 9 pics - 4 before and 4 after you press the button, and obviously one when you do.. :-)

This sure as hell is interesting. Not just that Sony Ericsson takes moblogging seriously, that was bound to happen. But the partnership with google. Who could have guessed that a few years ago?

Now I wonder, will it stop here - forcing all Cybershotusers to moblog at blogger, or can the Cybershot be configured to blog to other moblogs and photosharingsites, like textamerica, moblog.co.uk, Flickr and mobilblogg.net?

The lack of moblogging ladies

Read an article about how moblog.co.uk have only about 30 percent females among their bloggers.
I am sad to report the same from mobilblogg.net

It should be 50/50, and why it is not, I dont know. Is it because moblogging is considered to be tekkie, nerdie and by streotyping then a male thing? Possibly.

But if we stereotype the other way and claim that women are better at communicating, more willing to chatter and share their daily life with one another (the male stereotype being the strong silent man) then there should be more female bloggers.

Shouldnt it?

Anyways, - girls- if you need help with this "moblogging thing" then register at a moblogservice, we will be more than happy to help you get started.

Moblog for small business

Blogging is recognized as a smart sollution for small size companies. No big investement is demanded to get started, and all you need to do is write about what you love most- your company!

With moblogging you also get the possibility to post when not at your office/computer. At mobilblogg.net we have 2 bands, one tshirt company and one local shoe shop moblogging. None of these are big enough to have a PR agency, none of them does any other promotion exept from their regular websites.

Open-for-all-moblogs v.s. open-for-some-moblogs

Alfie Dennen, of moblog.co.uk got a mail from Ewan MacLeod asking what Alfies opinion about 3's"myGallery" is.

Alfie has a lot to say, but not many nice things:

"Even reading the text in the intro you know the problem? It's marketing speak, plain and simple, rather than letting the product speak for itself by just *being there*, being open.

You cant even go in and have a poke around unless you join! The other really crazy thing, a lesson yet to be learned by MNO's I think, is that you should not be charging your users over and above the already steep messaging odds just to share their content online.

3 mygallery charges 3 TIMES the standard messaging rate! And even then only gives you 10mb free storage.

My final gripe, and boy I do seem to love to gripe :) is; what does one 3 user have in common with another? What is their communal bond? Bugger all, MNO's should build these things and keep them open IMO, and in that way reach other networks users and have a better chance of tempting them over to their network.

By keeping it open and letting it grow, without overcharging users, and letting a community grow organically, they will end up with something of real value, a community, rather than trying to derive its' value from direct and immediate revenue. It's the old "the power of a network derives from it's nodes" net adage."

I have no objections to what Alfie says, but still feel I should add something in defense of 3, and that is that Alfie argues from a community perspective that 3 might not have. Maybe 3 is good enough for "online photo albums"? (well, no it isn't, its too pricy)

The dilemma for 3, and all other carriers, or phone manufacturers such as Nokia, is that company policies hinder them from developing something like an "open for all moblog". Instead, they are constrained to build for their customers only.

The plan is to tie their customers closer to them, maybe even making them sort of "addictives" of their services. But it's bound to fail and will only create badwill.

Would you like to loose your moblog just because you switched operator? Because you bought a new phone? No. So you don't even start moblogging under such premises, do you? Nope, you dont. So all money spent by 3 is lost (but they are getting it back from traffic created by operator independent moblog outfits, like mobilblogg.net :-)

Hmm.. you wonder why? Well, so do I. The quote comes from a survey done by In Stat

"People who haven't yet purchased camera phones are very enthusiastic about all the uses for their images," said David Chamberlain, In-Stat analyst. "However, once they start using their new phones, they are turned off by perceived poor picture quality, slow network speeds, and the difficulty of creating and sending pictures. Our survey found that very few pictures actually make their way out of the handset to be shared with others."

Anyways, I personally think that a broad majority of the potential users (the two thirds) simply does not know how to share, that is- how to register at a moblog service, or that moblogs even exists. - "the difficulty of creating and sending pictures." (And of course, some might just not be interested in sharing?)

We do our best to keep it simple at mobilblogg.net an to please as many as possible. That includes "not sharing", all mobloggers have the option to keep the pictures they send in for themselves by using the passwordprotection and privacy features we have.

Posts can be public, for registered moblogers only, for registered mobloggers you have marked as friends only, or only for you.

Public post can be posted on the frontpage, among the "latest posts" for others to comment, or only published at your personal page - your moblog.

That way, all three thirds should be pleased :-)

Again, most of them tries to find a browser when travelling, to see whats going on back home, checking the recent moblogging done by their friends.

When our user BOS went travelling, he did all of this, snapping away pictures to his moblog from the northen island to the southern and back again.

While mobilephones are getting more common, man as a social creature still is the same- we WANT to tell the world things we are proud or angry or happy about. Communication and social interaction is basic needs, as is food, sleep and love.

Cameraphones is the latest tool to be adopted by man to do this.

That said, exactly HOW people are gonna use these tools, is an open question. What will appeal to most people, is interaction with other people with similar interests. Like in any community on the web, or any social structure IRL. Something must be shared, an interest, a common experience, a common goal.

No successful community is for everybody all the time. Services providing limited scope, narrower target groups (like body builders) are likely to be more succesfull.
(of course, broader scope, like we have at moblblogg.net will still be attractive to some, shared interst is: "I wanna moblog")

All in all, there is room for multiple platforms for this. Flickr, Shozu, fotochatter, mobilblogg.net, textamerica and so on. Each with their feature, or group of users, or whatever will make them differ.

Since all this is very new to people, we lack the proper words to describe it (at least I do). What I mean, I lack a word to describe, identify and separate Flickr from Shozu, textamerica from fotochatter.

Some still argue what a moblog is. (I'm not sure fotochatter is, and they dont call themselves by that name. They describes themselves "a mobile social network for image sharing". Flickr on the other hand is a "online photo management and sharing application" but still ends up in moblog discussions, articles and recently tests - with rightly shitty scores, because they are not a moBLOG)

Millions are moblogging even before the word is known by most people.*

That shows potential.

What will happen when moblogging gets more attention in mainstream media? We will soon know- it is happening right now, at least in Scandinavia.

*(well, to be honest, most peolpe dont know what a blog is, we tend to forget that)

I think we will have to do a survey like this on mobilblogg.net

We have alpha users blogging several pics a day, who has been doing so since they first registered.

I blog once a day, at minimum, to have a diary I can look back into in the future (using the calendar too see what I did or what filled my mind today a year ago)

The alpha users moblog their pic's for other reasons, some are like bloggers are most - wanting to write about the world, their life, whatever- other are more community oriented, using their moblogging as interaction with other mobloggers. ("nice coffemug, here is a picture of my mug")

Those who fall out first are the "theme bloggers", moblogging on one topic only (for example we had a commuter only blogging from train, subway and busses, writing about passenger behaviour, illustrating with cameraphone photos. He ran out of passenger stereotypes pretty fast).

They seem to be done after a while, finished telling whatever was on their mind.

Sometimes sounding a bit like I did a few post ago, inspired by Joi Ito.. asking - what happened to moblogging after 2003? Did it dissapear in the web 2.0 hype?

My prediction is the same as the last time "moblogging is being adopted by the masses". So its not cool enough to hype. But it is more "powerful" since more and more use it.

To use a little fantasy metaphor:
"Moblogging is being adopted by the hordes of Mordor (pr0n), and the lazy halflings of the shire (your dad), so wizards, elves and the dwarf craftsemen (alphageeks) create new artifacts (all things web2.0).
-Who wants to deal with simple every day magic?"

-Well guess what?, the moblogging hordes are massing at different servers, such as mobilblogg.net's.

Fire moblogged

Again, a moblogger provides a movieclip to a newsite. This time the newspaper Sydsvenskan" in southern sweden recieved footage from a mobile user of a fire in central Malmö, Sweden.

What I find sad, is that it always is accidents that make headlines. This fire was serious, and people got hurt, i'd like to see some positive news where mobloggers are there before the reporters.

Just a link and some thoughts

Joi Ito sounds a bit despirited and asks if more moblogging will help.

Anyways, he's right. Moblogging has been around since 2003 and not much has happened... or has it?

Not regarding new development. More of the same has happened. More mobloggers, more mobilecameras, more users, more moblog publishers. But nothing NEW.

When looking at our users at mobilblogg.net they are clearly not early adopters. They are common people (whatever that is) with ordinary jobs (whatever that is). Not the alpha geeks. They left moblogging in 2003. And did something else. Like tagging and AJAX.

The next logical step is consuming blogs via the phone. But connection speed will keep that development on hold for a while. At least for our users. (we'll see what can happen with 3G and Wifi phones, but we are not there just yet).

But then again- since moblogging is coming to the masses- some of the bigger powers of the web and mobileindustry (Google, Nokia, 3, msn) are starting to pay serious attention to moblogging.

Known problems

Hm.. I sort of agree to this. Not the Nokia part, but the rest. If Nokia is exchanged to "Mobile manufacturers" I agree more (SonyEricson can't remain sleeping in class for the whole of 2006). Well, he said "pushed PARTLY by Nokia", so ok. Maybe I agree completely.

But also, I think a lot of moblog publishers, like us at mobilblogg.net, will do our part in hyping moblogging.

My prediction is also, that the carriers will remain invisible. (although- they make most of the money from moblogging)

Our Swedish site mobilblogg.nu is mentioned in a monthly magazine for subscribers to Ny Teknik (New technology) and Affärsvärlden (business world).

They interview me, a PR consultant -Hans Kullin- and two of our users (mobilblogg.net/fubbick & mobilblogg.net/padde)

But most of all they write about moblogging in general - which I think is most important -There are too many not moblogging in this world :-(

But they didn't mention the English version, at all. Maybe just as good, since the magazine is distributed in Swedish only.

Worlds first moblogger

Extreme times demands extreme solutions. A Dane living in a tree- protesting against the construction of a highway, created the worlds first moblog in may 2000.

It was SMS to web, and NOBODY, was interested (he tried media, he tried phone companies). Regardless of the lack of attention he received back then, he definitely has a place in the Mobloggers Hall of Fame. May your name live forever Tom Paamand!

He did not win the fight over the motorway. It's up and empty (It was built in areas not so populated in Nothern Jutland).

Update: Hmm been thinking some more.. isn't this moblogging in a nutshell? First Invented by a Danish Treehugger, and not as you would expect, by some researchteam of deep coders at Sony Ericsson or Vodafone?

Mobile podcasting - mobcasting

So far mobliblogg.net is for pics and movieclips.

Next feature will be mobcasting. The user scenario is this:

Instead of taking a picture/record a film with the phone an audioclip is recorded with the phone. An MMS is created and text can be added.

When sent, the sound will be posted with some type of icon showing readers that it is a soundfile. It can also be subscribed to with RSS. The clip is converted to MP3 regardles ogf how it was recorded.

The limitations, as far as I can see, is on the lenght/size of the file. A MMS has it's limitations.

Therefore - e mail will still be an option for posting to the moblog.

Quietly launched in September to Opera browser users, the My Opera Community site is attracting an average of 1,000 new members per day, the browser developer has said.

MMS is apparently the only option to post to your moblog.

I have used Opera for surfing on my SE P900 for some time now. But this I didn't know.

Growing with a thousand users a day, most users from Asia and Europe, this will be interesting to follow.

Yes they could, but DO they? No...

I know of one Real Estate Agent who used mobile blogging, but that was for a company event limited to a few weeks. A PR campaign that was sucesesful (and we did it ;-)

It might develop to something more serious, like posting pictures and information about houses and apartments for sale on the company website.

hey hey... MMS will do. You are right about that most modern mobiles will let you send e mails, but at least MY experience is that people cant be bothered configuring that e-mail account.

MMS is more or less plug and play and installed from the store. You are more than welcome to try for yourself and see if it works.

South China Morning Post has a good article about how content creation and moblogging could be the killer app for 3G.

One problem the author sees for mobile blogging is one many living outside the US will have faced. While the major blog hosting providers are global in reach , often their mobile services or the capability to mob-log is limited to the US mobile carriers' networks, meaning it is not possible to use your UK network - for example - to post to your blog.

Hm.. Why not? What did I miss? Isn't there any other (mo)blogservices than the American ones?... (If you are not sure let me say: YES there is)

And what does "global in reach" mean- a French, or Swedish blogservice supporting local networks is not global in reach?

The debate about censorded (mo)blogs at Skyblog (french radiostation hosting blogs) goes on. They where shut down because they supposedly coordinated the French riots

There is no way in which the police can keep track of all all bloggers. So what I dont get is this:

There are plenty of blogservices on the web, so when they found "suspicious" bloggers at Skyblog, why not monitor them instead of shutting them down, and making them move on and blog somewhere else?

The strategy with censorship is bound to fail. The size of the bloggosphere makes it impossible. I think there were/are plenty of blogs not discovered by the french police. Skyblog gets the blame/fame here because it's a small confined communityblog hosted by a radiostation with commercial interests who do not want bad PR.

An independent moblog created and hosted by its own blogger(s) could not be shut down so easily.

Another strategy than censorship is needed for "the next time".

Not Nice or No Price?

Found this article where Moblog is compared to MSN Spaces.

Moblog wins this comparison, but MSN is chosen because it's for free.

Im Happy mobilblogg.net is closer to Moblog in its overall functionality (anonymous comments etc) and has the same pricing model as MSN (for free!)

I wrote a comment, lets see if we get any blogging from there ;-)

BTW, it feels a bit lika spamming- writing comments like that-, but I see no other way to spread the word about mobilblogg.net

Have anyone seen moblogging from France lately?

well.. there are some pics at Flickr

But compared to the London bombing it's not much, and more important for this blog:its not mobilephotos.

Write me a line at muzagga@muzagga.nu if you know some moblogsite covering the Paris Riots.

the censorship police has already passed through the Parisian blogsphere. Many blogs containing live pictures of the riots were censored.

If this is true.. (but how can it be?), it might give the answer to the lack of moblogs of the french riots.

We had a small... no a GREAT success at mobilblogg.net last week, We got our first non-european moblogger!

Since we are based in Sweden, and most users are Swedish (writing a lot in swedish, moblogging pictures of Sweden and swedish everyday life), we have been most sucessfull in Sweden and our fellow scandinavian countries.

So this was important to us ;-) Now we have a user from Egypt.

Moblog or pictureblog- you choose

The community at mobliblogg.net had some recent fights lately about what is acceptable to post. Are pictures not taken by a cameraphone ok?

I say - if its not taken by cameraphone its not a moblog, then its a pictureblog, but it's still ok.

So a picture sent by email from the PC sure still is a blogpost, but the "mo" is not there.

And still- we accept it at mobilblogg.net, which upset some users.

We want to be a moblogtool, sure, but bending the rule: "picture must be taken with cameraphone", is sometimes necessary for some of our users to express themselves the way they want.

Therefore, you might sometimes see pictures posted by some of our users that are clearly not taken by cameraphones.

That fight was a clash between users with emphasis on mobile blogging focused on the startpage, and those more interested in plain blogging focused on their own ( /username) blogpage, sometimes using their phone, sometimes not.

Interesting to note is that some users are more strict about the purpose of mobilblogg.net than the crew who created it are.

Moblog and money- who gets it?

While users seem to love the ability to post pix on the fly, the real beneficiaries will be carriers, who've been looking for ways to plump up their flat revenues-per-customer.

Isnt that nice? Guys like the mobilblogg.net crew create moblogs so that:

Phone manufactures can sell more phones with better cameras.
Carriers can sell more traffic.
and Broadband companies can sell more traffic (people want to view moblogs via web browser)

You could expect the carriers to be investing, building and marketing moblogging. Instead, Nokia is ahead on this matter. And they are still left behind by the independent moblog services. (Anyone with another opinion?)

Remember how I talked about the word movlog being used more and more..?

Stumbeled over this newly launched website for videocasting. The word Movlog is on the frontpage.

I havent tried mooom, in fact I havent even signed up. Im just pleased to see the definition between vlog and movlog being clearer.

Hm.. is movlog a japanses word? A technoratisearch on movlog certainly suggests so. Almost all hits are from japansese blogs. (If they're not from this blog :-)

Was interviewed by a reporter here in Sweden writing an article about moblogging.

He asked "How many moblogs are there" which is an interesting question.

To answer that we need to define - what is a moblog?
Is it
1-A persons, or group of persons, blog, updated via mobile phone? (then, it's impossible to count how many there are)
or
2- is it a publishing platform, a moblog tool, where you can create a moblog? (like http://www.mobilblogg.net/ ). Lets call them "Moblog Publishers"

That was what the question was about (I asked him)- how many moblog publishers are there?

Well -there are three types of moblog publishers:
-the clean mobloggers, (lots of community functions, example: textamerica, )
-the blogtools with support for mobile publishing (lots of blogging functionality, RSS, Ping, rackback etc- example: blogger).
-and the third which is picturesharing, . Not intended for blogging but working fine from cellphones. (lots of tagging and search, example: Flickr)

I think the reporter meant category one moblogging with his question, the "clean mobloggers".

And how many textamericalike moblogtools are there?

My guess is hundreds, but not thousands... I'm trying to keep track of them but I find new ones every day. So my guess will be about 150-200. The big ones being in English or Japanese. Smaller ones in Polish, Finnish, Swedish and so on. (just try every domain for the word moblog, http://www.moblog.pl/ http://www.moblog.nl and so on :-).

But are they blogs or are they communitys, social softwares? For most cases I'd like to answer: both, but leaning on communitys. Some lay emphasis on pictures, some on blogging. Some allow private password protected pictures and and most allows personal pages and ablums, but some don't.

Some, like mobilblogg.net, tries to do everything.

NOTE: Some Moblogs are small and closed. Open for public to view, but offers no way to publish.

I focus on the bigger ones that wants you to register and create your own moblog.

iPod video's means boost to movlogs?
Since most movlogs are rather small, and of poorer quality compared to many other video formats, they are well suited to watch in your iPod. The size of the screen on an iPod is about the same as a 3pg recorded on your mobile was meant for (the screen on your mobile).

What I haven't figured out yet is which video formats iPod supports and can play (.mpeg, 3pg, .mov .mp4?)

In one of the "sleeping sites"(this one funded by Nokia) covering Moblogging I found this interesting prediction:

The rise of moblog stars. The idea is not bad, with all the docusoaps on TV this could get very good. All you need is a good setup, a cameraphone and a moblog.

Sony Ericsson Experience - Moblog

I have been mentioning Nokias Lifeblog in some posts now, so I thought I'd better write a line about Sony Ericssons moblog.

You didn't knew it existed? You'r not alone. Not much happening there, and how on earth are you supposed to find your way to it? My guess is that it is a testarea, not really meant to be open and free for all to post at.

Yesterday they had 4 posts. And you are restricted to use e-mail only... well.. at least it works from both phone and computer, so you'r not obliged to use a SE phone (which I, by the way, do)

IS this a moblog or is it a mailblog? or a mail message board? (where are the "blog" features of this moblog?). Where do i register my account? How do I find my pictures again? Can I tag and/or use albums?

Is this it?

Listen , Mr Sony Ericsson, do You take this seriously or not? Or have I by mistake found something that wasn't supposed to be a public moblog? Or is it something from 2003 you never bothered to unpublish?

Another explanation could be that more will follow...

Where are the Mobarazzi pics?

There has been some talk for example here here and there about the rise of paparazzi camerapics of celebrities. But where are the pics?

Few actual mobarazzi pictures have made headlines.

The picture of Prins Harry in a Nazi uniform is supposedly taken by a cameraphone (but not blogged).

Some of the first pics of the London Bombing were from mobile cameras, and posted on blogs and Flickr.

We can expect this mobarazzi thing to grow, but so far, considering how many potential mobarazzi's are out there, there isnt´t much to see.

Note:
Mobarazzis are sometimes called snapparazzis.

What if cameraphones and moblogs had been invented 100 years ago? A 1000 years ago.. or more?

What if all moblogs will stay on the internet for over a 100 years? A 1000 years? ...or more? Imagine finding the moblog of Julius Caesar, or Patton... or maybe one of their grunts.

Who's moblog would You like to find on some long-forgotten url?

Or which persons moblog from today would you like to follow? The pope? Usama Bin Ladins? Paris Hilton?
